Adam D. Boyd - Music

In Professor Sistrunk’s class we speak about how everything is becoming Cloud-based. That being said all hard copies of anything are becoming available to us in a more efficient way known as the Internet. We now don’t need a Blockbuster or Movie Zone because we have NetFlix. No longer need to have meeting in the same room because we have Skype and Oovoo. But where we as a society use the Internet the most is downloading music.

No longer is there a need to go to a store and buy an album when you can have the album before it comes out, not have to pay for anything, and it download straight into your ITunes connecting straight to your phones, IPads, ect. It started off with LimeWire back in High School and has now progressed to basically any music site on the Internet.

These are two of the main places where you can go and download entire albums and/or mixtapes in the blink of an eye. The new found love for downloading music rather than buying has effected the music industry a lot by bringing down record sales to an all time low and making it harder for artists to stay relevant. It seems like when Michael Jackson was out, as long as we were able to get an album every year and half (12 Songs) the public was satisfied. Yet now with times changing it seems a record every week is now the norm. Artists no longer wanting to sign record deal where they are required to complete four albums where their money is split multiple ways when they now can release a mixtape for free not have to pay no where as many people as they would a studio album and go on tour performing songs from his/her mixtape. Performances in which result in tax-free amounts, split between artists, managers, and that person here and there. Is this a good thing or bad thing! We as the pubic get free music and the artist stay on tour for years at a time releasing new music continuously just to stay relevant.

  1. I found this especially to be interesting since I am an avid "downloader" of free music. I never knew there was a website that allowed you to acquire whole albums especially since sites like limewire and napster have been getting shut down due to federal laws on downloading music. I will be using these sites in the future to get most of my music.

  2. I too found this post to be very interesting aswell, I went to both sites and downloaded music. The only problem that i have faced is trying to download music that is not off of mixtapes. Chris Carr talks about sites like limewire and napster that use to allow the users to download all kinds of music but now that they are shut down i have been dying to find a new way to download non-mixtape songs for free.

  3. This blog was very interesting in so many ways, and it practically sums up the life of a college student. In college anything free is labeled as "gold". These two sites have played a major role for my musical entertainment purposes. So, Sistrunk was absolutely right when he told us we need to stay with the cloud, because there is a large possiblity that you may get left behind! Musical artists are catching on to these new tricks everyday, and with the growth of the clouds they are finding new ways to bring in funds.-Timothy Camper

  4. This websites are very good sites to use I often use them myself. However, the only problem with these sites are they do not have new cd's that artists come out with. They just have mix-tapes that the artists put on for free anyway. So if you were to want the new Future CD you couldn't use either of the sites to download it. So i-tunes still can serve to be useful in someways but most people would rather just type the cd into google and search for a free download. -James Williams

  5. I believe that this is a good and bad thing. It is good because when an artist releases a mixtape they aren't affected by the pressure of selling a certain amount of albums to please their record company while at the same time they can see what type of songs their fans really like and what doesn't work for them. This is helpful so when its actually time for them to make a studio album it should be comprised of the types of songs their fans would like to hear from them. Usually if an artist is connecting well with the fans then he or she won't have to worry much about album sales. On the other hand, this is bad because people now if they even consider buying a hardcopy of someones album they will listen to it online for free and figure out if its even worth buying; which as stated in the blog post takes away from album sale as well as artist credibility with their record labels.

  6. I definitely download all my music from these 2 website. However, they only provide mistakes. This allows the artist to to be more independent without having to depend on labels. Artists can go on tour off a mixtape instead of mass producing an album. Now you have more room in your budget..

  7. Being able to download music is just another example of times changing from the industrail age to the technology age. With all of the modern technology it just gives people easier access to an abundance of things. With downloading music being one of them.

  8. I found this blog extremely helpful because iTunes can get quite expensive when downloading and buying music. I'm glad that websites like this exist.

  9. I believe the ability to download music for free online is very useful. As Eddie stated, itunes and buying hard disc can become very expensive and, perhaps, should go into most households monthly budgets. I, download all my music for free using youtube-mp3.com. But I have to be honest, when you hear how our illegal habit hurt others careers and takes food out of their family's mouths, I cannot help but feel a little remorseful. However, once I look at my bank account and see that I saved some money, I quickly buck-up! If only there a way to find a happy medium..

  10. I have been using livemixtapes.com and datpiff.com since high school. It has been a great source for music especially for underground artists. Personally I have saved money by using these websites due to the music being free to download. Before I found out about this site I was forced to go to flea markets and various stores around Atlanta to purchase the CDs.

  11. In today's world, cd's have become almost extinct due the websites discussed in mr. boyd's post. Personally, I use these websites to download new music for free because it saves me a substantial amount of money.

  12. This post was very interesting and relative because the use and purchase of cd's are made very little nowadays. I personally have been using datpiff and other sites like filestube.com in order to download my music. It just makes things more convenient.

  13. I would say that this is the era of mixtapes and free music. When people can get around the act from going to a record store and purchasing music they will take advantage. and websites like Datpiff and LiveMixtapes will prosper in the long run.
