Zayd Babb-Alibey

During our many classes we covered various topics that covered how the world is moving to being more cloud based and more innovative. We spoke briefly about google developing a car that will actually drive itself. Growing up many thought that by this day and age we would have already reached that stage and surpassed it, moving towards flying cars as seen on the Jetsons. But instead we are just reaching this point. It may be that us as humans aren’t ready to allow artificial intelligence take control and drive us without our assistance.

But if we really think about it, it is already happening. Take GPS for example, we no longer depend on maps or mapquest directions, we now depend on a device to tell us where to go. Or the cars that are equipped with active park assist, the blind spot indicators, and even ways to tell if your falling asleep at the wheel and keep you awake. Looking more into this I came across Safe Road Trains for the Environment (SARTRE). This technology alloys you to connect your car to a convoy along the highway and basically allow the car to drive by itself and be controlled by the train leader. The train leader controls the breaking, steering, and acceleration of your car until you send a signal saying you want to leave the train. Once you send the signal you regain full control of your vehicle and can continue on your way doing whatever you like. This may sound very iRobot like but this is an reality and will change how we drive day to day and take trips in the future.

  1. Nick Holland-I think that this technology is coming sooner than we think. I think that the government has had technology like this for sometime now and has applied it to military uses before letting it trickle down the the common people. I would like to see how they could integrate this with the technology in the google glasses, somehow projecting all of that on to the cars windshield wile driving but in a safe way.

  2. this new world that we are going to be living in is insane! i am excited about the future and the new technology, but still i fear for humanity. I just hope that the technology that we believe is alleviating some of the mundane, wont lead to our own demise. I just fear that we dont become a lazy and un motivated society

  3. These innovative ideas are life savers in many cases. From trying to find the closest Wal-Mart or Chik-Fil-A rather. Rather than simply driving around the city searching for a store or restaurant that could only be found on your GPS. GPS's have helped save us all gas money and time in our days with their assistance. The invention of the car will be a mind-blowing yet I feel may have technical difficulties that could lead to tragic losses.

  4. I think this auto pilot like technology will be great, because each and every year car accicents are one of the leading killers of Americans. If this technology is similiar to the auto pilot used on planes, driving will become just as safe as flying. This will drive both prices of cars and plane tickets to decrease because of the shift in demand to drive will increase. I still love driving and having control of my vehicle but I would definitly invest in this technology when I have to take my long distance drives back to New York from Atlanta.

  5. This new technology is great for drivers who like to do other things such as text, read, and etc. to finally complete their tasks and also reach their destination. This will also cut back on wrecks and possible speeding tickets because your car will be programmed to keep a certain distance from the car ahead.

  6. This type of technology is fascinating. I wonder if bus companies like Greyhound can take advantage of this for taking people to different cities. Or even MARTA for taking commuters to Downtown Atlanta. This can have the potential of bringing in significant revenue.

  7. In thought, this type of technology saves so much time, gas, mileage on your car, wear and tear on your car; etc. It helps so much for college students especially, in that some of us have worn cars, and minimal funds. It not only saves lives from text, phone calling drivers, it helps save money for college students, and people with minimal funds.

  8. The thought of new technologies that wills soon be available to the public is an exciting thought for me. Google is paving the way presently and I would say in the future also as they are working hard to develop smart cars that drive themselves. They are also working on google glasses that will totally change the way we socially do our day to day activites.

  9. The whole point of this class is to teach us students about the technology currently in use in the business world, and how to utilize all of our resources in order to develop business acumen (and frugality, as taught by Professor Sistrunk). Technology moves so quickly now; the days of flying cars can't be too far away.

  10. This technology will be very interesting to see in the future. Its crazy to think of back in the day when Ford Motor Company first came out with the automobile. When comparing that first model to cars now one can only be amazed on how far we have come. I share the same interest in how these new auto piloted cars will develop in the future as this is one of the first models of that as well. Our children will probably look back and think how primitive we are now. -James Williams

  11. Technological advances in the past decade or so have been very effective in what they were advanced to do which is make our lives easier and in some cases safer. I believe that every technological advancement will always be an advantage for the human race and our life spans. They will only be advantageous to us if we remain in control of the technology because I believe there is a possibility of the technology getting out of hand if we don't always have some type of full proof scapegoat that will allow us to assume manual control whenever we need to.

  12. I agree that we are moving more in more into the cloud age. I feel as though humans are not ready for a computer to take control of there everyday life. Though in this blog u make great points with the examples of gps technology, i believe it's a big difference being giving the option of making a right turn then the car actually making it.

  13. I don't think that we are "moving" into the cloud age, I feel that we are already there. Everything that we do on the internet is stored on the internet and has been for some time. So essentially the cloud based system has been in place, its just coming more widespread now.

  14. I agree on the fact that humans are not ready for a technology to be at the forefront of everything, taking control of our everyday lives. It is hard to except that when there are constant hints as to how society would react to such a change in things like the media, movies, and other sources, which have a lot of influence nowadays.

  15. I think the idea of cutting the time and feeling the gap from the transportation from home to workplace can be beneficial. I do feel like it would take many years for the idea to come to life. There's a lot things involved in the process of turning highway roads into something that detailed.

  16. I think ideas like this and google's car are leading us to a point where driving will be a thing of the past. Unfortunately I can see other public transportation industries taking a toll.
